The main keyboard is a Roland XP-80 Sequencer. This allows us to record the drums, keyboards and all other instruments including synthesizers onto disk to produce the full sound we want. The XP-80 is a few years old now, but it is perfect for this job. It is a professional instrument and is used by many keyboard players. It's based on the same synth engine as the Roland JV series. For creating drum patterns, it is ideal. We can record the drums exactly as the original artist or make up our own to suit, with infinitely variable beats and tempos. Although the drum sounds mainly come from the SR-16 Drum Machine, for more complicated sections involving many different types of percussion, the in-built drum sounds of the XP-80 are also used. David has 1 of these and 2 XP-60s which are the 61 key versions for on stage use - as the XP so important to the band, one's a back up! |
